Coming Soon: Free Linux Mobile Internet Computers?

The Linux mobile device market may soon resemble the cellular smart phone market. Specifically, you might receive a free mobile Internet device (MID) as part of a wireless service plan, predicts Canonical marketing manager Gerry Carr. I spoke with Carr during OSCON 2008.

According to Carr, mobile Internet devices (MIDs) running Ubuntu Linux are closer to smart phones than laptops in design. They should be widely available from major hardware suppliers in late 2008 or early 2009. How much will MIDs cost? In some cases, the devices could actually be free as part of a service contract, Carr predicted.
