Will Lenovo Launch Ubuntu Linux Servers?

Lenovo is leaping from Thinkpad notebooks to launch servers this September. Our sister site, TheVARguy.com, reports that the servers will come with either Windows Server or Linux.

So, will Canonical’s Ubuntu Server Edition be among the options that Lenovo offers? The answer is unclear for the moment, but I suspect the short-term answer is no.

Lenovo plans to offer a choice of two Linux distributions. In that case, the obvious bets are Novell SUSE Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. But we’ll know for sure in September, when Lenovo launches its servers at Interop New York.

There is about 1% chance they will offer Ubuntu Server as an option.

It will take years before Ubuntu Server can be included in the same sentance as RedHat Server [or SuSE, or any other pro-grade or corp Linux]. You don’t just break into the Linux Server market by putting out a distro.

Ubuntu Linux is for the desktop and to change this is next to impossible with the way things work. It took 100s of millions of dollars for RedHat and SuSE to get to the server and corp market. What does Canonical have?

Kevin: I realize Ubuntu Server Edition has a long, long way to go. But Canonical’s chances are better than 1 percent. Mind share on the desktop can generate market share on the server.

I see quite a few of Ubuntu-powered servers actually. People use them mostly because of the familiarity with the desktop.

Possibly because the “human-friendly” philosophy extends of the server also (see ufw).
