Nouveau is (as far as I can tell) the only driver that can correctly drive a 1680×1050 monitor with a 5000 series card; the -173 closed driver won’t do more than 1600 in the X-direction and nv would only do 1280×1024 on that monitor).

I’m sorry, I’m going to say this really as nicely as I possibly can, but…

that was, er, a teensy teensy teensy bit of a silly test to try. You noted, correctly, that nouveau has no 3D acceleration capability at present. You then proceeded to try and test its performance by using a utility which, insofar as it tests anything at all, tests 3D performance.

That is. Um. Again, trying to be nice here. Uh. Sub-optimal.

If you’re genuinely interested in testing 2D performance, probably the best option is cairo-perf-trace: http://cworth.org/intel/performance_measurement/

the second best (by a long way) option is gtkperf.

glxgears ranks somewhere around 16,546,789th on the list, right after ‘throw a dart at a photograph of Steve Ballmer’.
