Why Desktop Linux Doesn’t Excite Red Hat

Instead of waging a desktop Linux war, Red Hat continues to focus mainly on the server and open source middleware markets. I’ve always wondered why Red Hat isn’t competing more aggressively against Canonical/Ubuntu and Novell SuSE Linux for desktop and laptop OEM (original equipment manufacturer) agreements. Microsoft-Free PC: Where’s Sun?

When IBM got cozy with Canonical, Novell and Red Hat to announce the Microsoft-Free PC initiative, at least one closely related company missed the party: Sun Microsystems, the original advocate of OpenOffice. I’m starting to wonder if IBM’s Lotus Symphony efforts are starting to eclipse Sun’s own office suite efforts.
