Improving boot time has been a focus of Ubuntu developers in recent releases, with the goal of a ten-second startup set for Ubuntu 10.4.  To test progress thus far, I compared boot performance for Ubuntu 8.04, 9.04 and 9.10.  Below are the results, which demonstrate the impressive strides that have been made thus far towards a faster boot.

With the release of Hardy Heron only 5 days away, Canonical has announced the Hardy Heron 8.04 Long Term Release Candidate. Long term releases are releases that Canonical will support for three years on the desktop, and five years on servers.

With 8.04 “Hardy Heron” going into final release, they have started accepting pre-orders for CD’s at Shipit. After recently installing Ubuntu 8.04 Beta, I have seen numerous improvements that will bring welcome change to users in the near future. Now in beta stage, Ubuntu is stable enough for me or anyone else who is interesting in testing the new version. While I have not seen any problems, it is not recommended for use on production machines. Here are some highlights.
